As of March 15 this year, the global offshore engineering equipment manufacturing market's order value has reached US$13.384 billion, largely on par with last year, and the offshore engineering equipment market is expected to remain very prosperous this year.
Industry insiders say this means the high prosperity of the offshore engineering equipment industry will continue. This is because in 2011, the global offshore engineering equipment market order value reached US$69 billion, setting a historical record high, a year-on-year increase of 130%. It was also the first time that offshore engineering equipment orders exceeded the value of new ship orders in the same period, becoming the main source of new orders for the world's shipbuilding industry. The insider also stated that behind the booming offshore engineering equipment market is the emergence of a large number of high-value orders. According to statistics, in 2011, the average price of drilling equipment and production equipment (including new builds and modifications) was US$397 million per unit (vessel), which is much higher than the unit price in shipbuilding projects involved in ship manufacturing for a single vessel or rig, and this is far higher than the unit price in shipbuilding.
Peng Min, a senior analyst in the machinery industry at Founder Securities, believes that the offshore engineering equipment manufacturing industry is entering a golden period of development, especially for offshore oil and gas field exploration and extraction equipment, with very promising future prospects. Offshore engineering equipment typically has high technological content and high construction costs. Overall, the beneficiation order for the offshore engineering equipment industry is general assembly enterprises – design enterprises – key supporting equipment enterprises. Public data shows that from 2012-2016, global deepwater investment expenditure is expected to grow rapidly, with total expenditure reaching US$205 billion, a 90% increase compared to the previous five years.
However, the aforementioned industry insiders further stated that in the international market for offshore engineering equipment, primarily for offshore oil extraction, South Korea and Singapore have the strongest capabilities. Currently, China's offshore engineering equipment manufacturing capabilities are still lacking, especially in key equipment. From China's perspective, there is a greater advantage in the design and general assembly of offshore oil extraction platforms. Therefore, companies with technological accumulation and strong R&D capabilities in this area will benefit more. In terms of general assembly and design, China mainly includes CSSC, CSIC, CIMC, ZPMC, and Shanghai Jiagao, while for supporting equipment, Nantong Liwei Machinery, Asia Star Anchor Chain, Shandong Molong, and others are involved.
