April 16, 2012 News. It is predicted that Greek shipowner Almi Group will place orders for LNG carriers and drilling vessels totaling nearly 2 billion US dollars with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea.
Recently, Almi Group has started entering these two fields, attempting to achieve business diversification. Although current shipping market conditions are unfavorable, only the LNG carrier and drilling vessel markets remain buoyant. To enter these markets, the company recently established Almi Gas and Almi Drill. Furthermore, it is in final negotiations with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for a large order of LNG carriers, with an initial order for two 160,000 CBM class LNG carriers possibly placed as early as next week.
The company's chairman, Costas Fostiropoulos, stated that the LNG shipping market has good development prospects, and therefore, they hope to enter this market. He also stated that in addition to the two LNG carriers currently planned for order, they are also negotiating with major companies for additional charter contracts.
Therefore, according to the company's plan, in addition to the construction contracts for two LNG carriers signed with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, they may also sign contracts for up to four more vessels with a delivery date in 2015. Fostiropoulos stated that the two confirmed vessels have already been earmarked for charter contracts. Furthermore, Almi has also expressed interest in the offshore engineering field, and is currently with a shipyard negotiated new construction for up to two drilling vessels.
