Shandong Shipping expands its bulk carrier fleet significantly, ordering 12 82,000-deadweight-ton Kamsarmax bulk carriers from New Han Tong Shipbuilding Heavy Industry for a total investment of 2.7 billion yuan. This is also New Han Tong's first new ship order in a year and a half.

According to TradeWinds, these new vessels will be delivered between the end of 2024 and 2025, using conventional fuel. Each ship costs approximately US\$33 million, with a total value of US\$396 million (approximately 2.722 billion yuan) for all 12 vessels. Financing is provided by Shandong Huachen Financial Leasing Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shandong Marine Group Co., Ltd.

The 82,000-deadweight-ton bulk carrier is one of New Han Tong Shipbuilding Heavy Industry's main ship types. This type of vessel uses the SDARI-82 (2020) design from Shanghai Ship Design and Research Institute. Its features include an improved hull form for lower energy consumption and a propeller with a higher light running margin (LRM); it is equipped with a MAN-B&W 6S60ME-C 10.5 engine. At a speed of 14 knots, the consumption at design load draft is 23.18 tons, meeting the IMO Tier III NOx emission standards.

It is understood that this order is the first new ship order received by New Han Tong Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in over a year. Clarkson's data shows that New Han Tong's last order was in October 2021, when Nisshin Shipping (Japan) ordered three 82,000-deadweight-ton bulk carriers.

Sources say that New Han Tong Shipbuilding Heavy Industry did not sign any merchant ship construction contracts last year because the company believed that new ship prices were too low. With the current price increase, New Han Tong Shipbuilding Heavy Industry, which has an earlier delivery berth, has received inquiries from some shipping companies. Data shows that the price of newly built Kamsarmax bulk carriers has increased by at least 8% in the past 12 months, from US\$30.5 million to US\$33 million.
