Recently, British shipowner Union Maritime placed orders for eight 18,500-dwt chemical tankers at two Chinese shipyards, with a total value of $240 million (approximately RMB 1.65 billion).

Clarkson's data shows that these eight chemical tankers will be built by Mawei Shipbuilding and Wuhu Shipbuilding, four each, with delivery scheduled for 2025. The Mawei Shipbuilding order was signed on March 31, and the Wuhu Shipbuilding order on April 1. Although the price was not disclosed, sources say each new vessel costs approximately $30 million.

Previously, Wuhu Shipbuilding disclosed that it had signed contracts with well-known domestic and foreign shipowners for the construction of eight 18,500-dwt IMO Type II chemical tankers. Four of these have been confirmed as coming from Donghai Anhe Bulk Shipping Co., Ltd., with an additional four optional orders included in the contract. The other four are from Union Maritime.

Wuhu Shipbuilding introduced that this series of vessels has a deadweight tonnage of 18,500 tons, a cargo capacity of 21,000 cubic meters, a length of 149.80 meters, a breadth of 22.80 meters, a depth of 12.70 meters, and a design draft of 8.50 meters. It adopts a methanol dual-fuel reserved design concept, meets IMO Tier III emission standards, and can be retrofitted to use clean energy methanol fuel in the future, providing customers with a carbon-neutral solution. In addition to high flexibility and environmental performance, the vessel is designed to transport IMO Type II chemicals, including methanol and various biofuels.

For Mawei Shipbuilding, the Union Maritime order is the shipyard's first chemical tanker order in four years. According to Clarkson's data, the last time Mawei Shipbuilding undertook a chemical tanker order was in February 2019. Over the past two years, Mawei Shipbuilding has mainly undertaken feeder container ship orders. Among the shipyard's total backlog of 49 vessels, as many as 33 are feeder vessels, all ordered in 2021-2022.

Union Maritime is a UK-based shipowner and operator with a diversified fleet of vessels, including crude oil tankers, liquefied gas carriers, product tankers, and dry bulk carriers. The company website shows that its current fleet totals 66 vessels, including 43 product tankers, 4 crude oil tankers, 17 bulk carriers, and 2 offshore support vessels.
