China's Minying Shipbuilding Yard, Yangzhou Guoyu Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., recently signed a contract with Singapore shipowner PIONEER for the construction of eight 38,800-ton bulk carriers. It is understood that the shipowner is registered in Singapore and is backed by a well-funded American investment company.

In addition, in May of this year, Guoyu Shipbuilding also received an order for nine 38,000-ton deadweight bulk carriers from the Norwegian shipowner Axel C Eitzen, with a total order value of nearly US$190 million.

The vessels will be delivered in 2015-2016 and utilize the “Green Dolphin” design jointly developed by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, Wartsila, and DNV (Det Norske Veritas). This vessel is a new type of energy-saving and environmentally friendly ship in the handysize bulk carrier category, with significant advantages in fuel consumption and performance compared to similar vessels, saving 5 tons of fuel per day.
