Recently, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation's Seventh Research Institute successfully secured a contract to supply high-torque sensors for four large LNG dual-fuel ro-ro passenger ships ordered by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). This marks the first application of China's independently developed high-precision marine measurement instruments in high-end export vessels, breaking the long-standing monopoly held by foreign suppliers in this field and achieving a “zero breakthrough.”

Dual-fuel engines operate in both gas and fuel modes, featuring complex technical structures. To achieve precise engine control, torque sensors are predominantly used to collect real-time output torque data from the main engine. This provides critical input to the control system, enhancing the reliability, precision, and safety of main engine operations.

Based on the high-precision torque signals of large ro-ro passenger ships and the shipowner's specific requirements, the 704 Institute achieved technological innovation and continuous refinement to develop a high-torque sensor with three core functions tailored for this vessel type.

— Intelligent Combustion Control. The system dynamically optimizes fuel injection volume/air volume, air-fuel ratio, and ignition (or injection) timing based on real-time load conditions. This ensures efficient, clean combustion in all engine modes while effectively suppressing knock and misfire phenomena.

— Smooth Mode Transition. During transitions between gas and fuel modes, the system precisely matches load based on torque signals, enabling seamless power delivery and smooth transitions. This completely eliminates power fluctuations and unplanned shutdowns.

— Load Limit Protection. By continuously monitoring torque, the system ensures the engine never operates beyond its limits during acceleration, hill climbing, or harsh sea conditions. This provides critical protection for the engine and transmission system, extending equipment lifespan.

The 704th Research Institute successfully broke through market barriers thanks to its independently developed high-torque sensor, whose functionality and performance now fully rival top-tier international counterparts.

The superior quality of these torque sensors stems from the institute's dual-leading domestic platforms for torque measurement and environmental/reliability testing. Its integrated service system—spanning development, production, calibration, and environmental adaptation verification—ensures every sensor delivers outstanding performance and high reliability.

This successful order not only marks a milestone in the development of China's torque sensor industry but also demonstrates the profound expertise and strength of the 704th Research Institute as a world-class R&D center for ship electromechanical technology and an innovative enterprise. It opens new growth opportunities for more high-end domestic marine equipment to enter global markets, fostering the internationalization of China's intelligent manufacturing industrial chain. This achievement contributes fresh insights and momentum to the global shipping industry's pursuit of green, safe, and sustainable development. (By He Baoxin)
