On March 16, local time, a 14,000 TEU ultra-large container ship "YM WITNESS" of Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation lost control and crashed into the pier while berthing in Turkey, causing multiple cranes to collapse "like dominoes." The accident resulted in one person seriously injured and losses of nearly 400 million yuan.

According to foreign media reports, the "YM WITNESS" arrived at Port of EVYAP in Kocaeli Province, Turkey, on the afternoon of March 16. There was a pilot on board at the time of the accident. During the process of preparing to berth, the ship was unable to stop in time due to unknown reasons and directly crashed into the pier at a large angle, consecutively knocking over 3 large cranes used for loading and unloading containers. Multiple containers on the ship also fell into the port as a result.

Footage captured by on-site staff showed that after the "YM WITNESS" hit the pier, a large crane used for loading and unloading containers was first pushed to the right, and then collapsed after hitting a crane on its right. As it collapsed, it tilted left and hit another crane. At this point, the outermost crane on the right that was hit began to tilt right and eventually fell directly to the ground, making a loud noise and raising dust. The crane on the left that was hit also subsequently fell.

Initial reports stated that this major accident did not cause any casualties, and that workers and crane operators were not present at the time of the incident. However, Turkish media later reported that the operator of one of the cranes was seriously injured in the accident.

Currently, the cause of the accident is still under investigation. The 3 cranes that collapsed in the accident are completely scrapped, and one more was affected. Each crane costs approximately 12 million US dollars, with estimated losses of at least 50 million US dollars (approximately 359.8 million RMB).

It is understood that the "YM WITNESS" is a container ship leased by Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, owned by Seaspan, the world's largest independent containership owner, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, and delivered for operation in 2015. The ship is 368 meters long, 51 meters wide, has a draft of 16.02 meters, a gross tonnage of 144,651 tons, flies the Hong Kong flag, and is classed by DNV.

Regarding this accident, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation responded that the company learned on March 16 that the "YM WITNESS" had an accident while berthing at Port of EVYAP in Turkey. Since the operational procedures of a chartered vessel are the responsibility of the shipowner and the shipowner is subject to maritime accident investigations, the accident involving the "YM WITNESS" during berthing will be actively clarified by the ship's owner with the competent authorities of the port of call.

Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation stated that the vessel is deployed on Yang Ming's DM3 route, and subsequent vessel movements and business impacts will be notified to customers once further information from the accident investigation becomes available.
