On May 31, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group subsidiary Yangzi Mitsui Shipbuilding successfully signed an order for 10+2 82500DWT bulk carriers with Lepta Shipping.
Representatives from the shipowner, including Mr. Akihito Hamada of Mitsui & Co., Mr. Kazuhiro Oguma of Toyo Shipbuilding, Mr. Ren Letian, Chairman of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, Mr. Song Shumming, Vice General Manager and General Manager of Yangzi Mitsui, Mr. Hideyuki Nebashi, CFO of Yangzi Mitsui, and Mr. Shinichi Nakao, Assistant General Manager, attended the signing ceremony.
The vessels in this project will be classed by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NK) and are expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2026.
It is understood that Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and Lepta Shipping have a long-standing cooperation, having previously collaborated on the construction of a series of 82000DWT, 180000DWT bulk carriers and 66000DWT bulk carriers. Currently, New Yangzi Shipbuilding is building 10 3500TEU series container ships for Lepta Shipping. The quality and performance of the four newly delivered ships in this series have been recognized by Maersk, the charterer.
With this new order, Yangzi Mitsui's current order book has expanded to include LEG carriers, LPG carriers, LNG Type B fuel tanks, MR product tankers, 80000DWT large dumpers, and new generation 82500DWT, wide-body shallow-draft 66000DWT, and 63200DWT vessels that meet Tier III and the third phase of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements, among other vessel types. The total order value is approximately US$2.1 billion, with full capacity scheduled until early 2027.
It is understood that Yangzi Mitsui was established as a joint venture between Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Mitsui E&S Holdings, Mitsui & Co., and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, and officially commenced operations in October 2019. Following Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding's decision to completely withdraw from the shipbuilding market, its merchant ship business and subsequent orders were transferred to Yangzi Mitsui Shipbuilding and its Japanese partner, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding.
Yangzi Mitsui adheres to its positioning of designing and building high-end and sophisticated ship products. It integrates the resource advantages of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group's technology center, the advanced design concepts of Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding, and the R&D capabilities of the Showa Island Laboratory in ship hull lines and performance optimization, forming a complete design system from conceptual design to production design. Currently, Yangzi Mitsui Shipbuilding is capable of building various merchant ships below 100,000 tons.
According to Yangzijiang Shipbuilding's plan, Yangzi Mitsui Shipbuilding will focus on tankers, chemical tankers, and other liquid cargo vessels, as well as LNG, LEG, and LPG vessels—high-tech and high value-added clean energy vessels—aiming to become a "large-scale green clean energy vessel" production base.
