On March 30, CSSC Nanjing Jinling Shipyard and Singapore shipowner CONSORT BUNKERS PTE LTD signed a contract in Nanjing for the construction of six 6,500-ton methanol fuel bunkering vessels. This order is also the world's first batch of methanol fuel bunkering vessels to take effect.
Ms. Yang Yunyi, director of Consort Bunkers, and Mr. Ding Jianliang, executive deputy general manager of Nanjing Jinling, jointly signed the contract. Relevant personnel and team members from both sides attended the signing ceremony.
The 6,500-ton methanol fuel bunkering vessel has an overall length of 103.88 meters, a molded breadth of 19.00 meters, and a design draft of 7.00 meters. It is equipped with twin screws and a bow thruster. The cargo oil tanks will adopt industry-leading technology, capable of carrying not only general refined oil but also methanol, fatty acid methyl esters, biofuels, etc., having obtained the Type II chemical tanker notation.
Compared with fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), methanol is more convenient to store and transport, has lower costs, and requires lower infrastructure modification costs. It has significant cost and safety advantages and is rapidly becoming the most feasible, lowest-carbon, and lowest-cost alternative marine fuel. Compared with traditional fuel vessels, vessels using methanol fuel can effectively reduce SOx emissions by 99%, NOx emissions by 60%, and particulate matter emissions by 95%. At the same time, green methanol can be obtained through biological, photovoltaic, and hydroelectric methods, thus achieving carbon neutrality for the entire life cycle of ship fuel.
With the continuous deepening of the international consensus on green shipping and green ship development, Consort Bunkers has proactively adapted to the transformation of green energy, taking the lead in providing methanol fuel bunkering services in major ports worldwide. This highly aligns with Nanjing Jinling's promotion of the concept of green upgrading of shipbuilding. After several rounds of friendly discussions, the two sides finally joined hands to sign this series of shipbuilding contracts. The signing and construction of this batch of orders is an important step for both sides to put the concept of carbon reduction into practice, helping the shipping industry reduce emissions from the source and create low-carbon shipping solutions, playing a positive role in promoting carbon reduction and emission reduction in the shipping industry.
Consort Bunkers was established in 1988 and is headquartered in Singapore. It mainly engages in ship refueling and fuel barge transportation in Singapore, the Middle East, and China. The company currently manages and operates more than 30 refueling vessels and is a pioneer in the Singapore refueling service field. For many years, it has provided diversified services to customers and has strong core competitiveness in fuel supply, maintaining a leading market position in the industry.
In recent years, Nanjing Jinling has taken "building an internationally competitive special ship building base" as its strategic positioning, deepened enterprise transformation and upgrading, and steadily promoted the greening and intelligence of shipbuilding. It has successively achieved the first application of several new energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies and processes on actual ships, such as air layer drag reduction, LNG fuel, and hybrid power with battery energy storage, effectively reducing ship emissions and striving to build environmentally friendly ships. It has accumulated rich practical experience in the field of green high-end ship manufacturing.
In the future, Nanjing Jinling will continue to cultivate the research and development of low-carbon products and carbon reduction technology innovation, and will practice the low-carbon and carbon reduction strategy with practical actions. At the same time, it will work with industry partners to take achieving the "dual carbon" goals as the core, actively assume the responsibilities of a central enterprise, and promote the green and low-carbon transformation of shipbuilding and shipping businesses.
