On March 16, Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding, successfully signed and finalized a contract with a well-known Asian ship owner for the construction of three 8600-car dual-fuel car carriers. This is the second time Guangzhou Shipyard International has received a bulk order for the same type of vessel, following a previous contract with South Korea's H-Line Company for three 8600-car dual-fuel car carriers. Guangzhou Shipyard International now holds orders for a total of 25 dual-fuel car carriers, ranking first in the world.
The 8600-car capacity car carrier series is an "enhanced version 2.0" of the 7000-car dual-fuel car carrier built by GuangZhou Shipyard International. The vessel has an overall length of 200 meters, a width of 38 meters, a design draft of 9.2 meters, a design speed of 19 knots, and uses an LNG/fuel dual-fuel propulsion system. With 14 vehicle decks, it increases the loading capacity by 1600 cars while maintaining the main dimensions of the 7000-car car carrier, maximizing the ship owner's vehicle transportation needs.
It is understood that the global fleet of Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC) is currently around 700. This type of vessel is a relatively niche specialized transport vessel in the shipping market, and Chinese shipbuilding companies have had limited construction and delivery records in this type of vessel in the past. In the past two years, with the rapid growth of global automobile trade, the order enthusiasm for car carriers has soared.

In April 2021, GuangZhou Shipyard International joined hands with Norway's SFL Shipping Company to sign a contract for the construction of two 7000-car dual-fuel car carriers, thus opening the curtain for receiving orders for car carriers. In just two years, it has become the world's largest shipbuilding company with the most orders for car carriers. In just two years, it has achieved a leap from "zero" to "number one in the world" in this field.
According to the data on the volume and value of key export commodities in China from January to February 2023 released by the General Administration of Customs, China's automobile exports increased significantly year-on-year, reaching 682,000 vehicles. The construction of car carriers is a concrete manifestation of GuangZhou Shipyard International's efforts to support China's automobile exports, actively adapt to changes in global automobile trade, proactively achieve product transformation, create and master core competitiveness, achieve global leadership in niche markets, and continue to make efforts in the "specialized, refined, distinctive, and new" aspects. Developing the car carrier construction market and achieving bulk orders is also a way for GuangZhou Shipyard International to find a path of high-quality development suitable for itself in the fiercely competitive market, laying a solid foundation for the company's continued profitability in its main business.
As a niche specialized transport vessel, the construction of car carriers presents many technical challenges. GuangZhou Shipyard International has now overcome all these challenges and mastered key core technologies, including thin plate structure deformation control technology, roll-on/roll-off equipment installation and commissioning technology, and LNG fuel system installation and commissioning technology. Before undertaking car carrier orders, GuangZhou Shipyard International had been cultivating the luxury passenger and ro-ro ship market for more than 20 years and is the world's leading manufacturer of luxury passenger and ro-ro ships.
In addition, GuangZhou Shipyard International is one of the earliest shipbuilding companies in China to build LNG/fuel dual-fuel vessels. As early as 2018, it took the lead in adopting this dual-fuel propulsion system on luxury passenger and ro-ro ships built for Swedish ship owners. In recent years, it has also extensively used LNG/fuel dual-fuel propulsion systems in the construction of conventional tankers and is currently the domestic shipbuilding company with the largest number of deliveries of the same type of vessels.
The construction of car carriers is an important manifestation of GuangZhou Shipyard International's high-quality development. As a special transport equipment in the shipbuilding industry, car carriers are characterized by high technology and high added value. Their construction process is actually a practical test of the shipbuilding company's refined management, testing the shipbuilding company's "embroidery skills". The construction of such vessels, on the one hand, has enabled shipbuilding companies to overcome many cutting-edge key core technologies in the field of shipbuilding, and on the other hand, has promoted the improvement of management capabilities of shipbuilding companies. Shipbuilding is a huge system project; any problem in any link may lead to the failure of the entire project, especially for the construction of such high-tech, high-value-added vessels.
The construction of car carriers is of great significance to establishing an independent value chain and supply chain. In recent years, GuangZhou Shipyard International has vigorously promoted the domestic production of shipbuilding supporting products. In the series of luxury passenger and ro-ro ships it has built and delivered, interior materials have achieved 100% domestic production, cultivating a large number of high-quality domestic suppliers and establishing a complete value chain and supply chain. By undertaking car carrier orders in bulk, this will play an important role in promoting the domestic production of supporting materials and equipment and ensuring supply chain stability.
