On September 26, Samsung Heavy Industries officially announced that it had won a contract to build six 22,000 TEU container ships The total value of the contract is 1.1 billion KRW (approximately 968 million USD), and the new ships will be delivered before the end of 2019. This order marks Samsung Heavy Industries' return to large-scale container ship orders after a seven-year hiatus.

Samsung Heavy Industries did not disclose specific information about the ship owner. However, industry sources believe that the ship owner is likely Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). Previous reports indicated that MSC would order a total of 11 22,000 TEU ultra-large container ships from Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, with Samsung Heavy Industries receiving 6 and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering receiving 5.

Last week, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced that it had received an order for 5 22,000 TEU ultra-large container ships, with a total value of approximately 926.6 billion KRW (approximately 817 million USD).

Including this latest container ship order, Samsung Heavy Industries has received orders for 24 new ships this year, with a total value of 6.5 billion USD.

South Korean industry experts say that the consecutive large-scale orders received by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Samsung Heavy Industries demonstrate the strong competitiveness of the South Korean shipbuilding industry in the international market.
