22000 TEU Container ship
The much-anticipated order for 22,000 TEU container ships from CMA CGM, a French shipping company, has finally been awarded to a Chinese shipbuilding company! This order marks the first new order for ultra-large container ships in 22 months and is the largest new ship order this year. This record-breaking contract will be recorded in the history of container ship development.
Today, CSSC and CMA CGM officially signed a contract in France for the construction of 6+3 22,000 TEU container ships, with a total value of nearly 10 billion RMB (approximately 1.4 billion USD). Nan Daqing, Vice General Manager of CSSC; Xing Wenhua, Director of the 708th Research Institute; and Yu Lai, Chief Expert of CSSC, attended the signing ceremony.
It is understood that these container ships are expected to be designed with LNG power, with a cost of approximately 150-160 million USD per ship. This order is based on a ship design with fully independent intellectual property rights from the Seventh 08 Research Institute of CSSC, and will be built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and Shanghai Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.
The ultra-large container ship in this contract has a deadweight of nearly 220,000 tons and a capacity of 22,000 TEU, making it the largest container ship in the world. It meets the emission standards of the most stringent emission-restricted areas globally and meets the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase III standard. This ship type has a more optimized overall hull form and structure, with a refrigerated container layout and system further improved, significantly reducing the cost per container. This ship type ranks among the top in terms of comprehensive power indicators, average container indicators, fuel consumption indicators, and cargo indicators, with optimal comprehensive indicators, ensuring the final bid win.
In early 2016, under the leadership of CSSC Trading Co., Ltd., the 708th Research Institute and CMA CGM discussed cooperation on the 22,000-TEU project. Leveraging strong technological reserves and R&D achievements in related projects, they actively completed the necessary contract documents and basic design preparations. The main performance and quantity indicators received full recognition from CMA CGM, laying a solid foundation for the new ship project. Subsequently, in April of this year, CMA CGM officially launched the bidding for 22,000 TEU container ships, requiring bidders to provide technical solutions for conventional heavy oil and LNG Ready. The 708th Research Institute, as the technical party of CSSC, worked closely with Hudong-Zhonghua and Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, as well as CSSC Trading Co., Ltd., to submit a complete technical solution within one week, including main performance indicators, main layouts, system options, and corresponding calculations and analyses. Finally, after a total of five rounds of bidding, CSSC successfully won the contract with CMA CGM, defeating five competitors including Imabari Shipbuilding, Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hyundai Heavy Industries based on its superior technical capabilities and strong track record of actual ship construction.
It is understood that this order is the largest container ship order ever placed by CMA CGM. The new ships will be delivered successively from the end of 2019 to 2020, and will then become the largest container ships in the world.
