Rolls-Royce reveals unmanned vessel development plan

Rolls-Royce recently unveiled a research and development plan for an autonomous unmanned vessel concept, designed to perform various single tasks such as patrol, surveillance, mine sweeping, or fleet screening. The vessel is 60 meters long, has a displacement of 700 tons, a range exceeding 100 days, a speed exceeding 25 knots, and a cruising range of up to 3500 nautical miles.
The "heart" of this concept ship is a powerful and reliable power-dense Propulsion system combining Rolls-Royce's proven turbine and Diesel engine expertise, as well as electric propulsion, energy storage, and Propeller technologies.
Rolls-Royce Naval Ship Electronic, Automation and Control Business General Manager Benjamin Thorp introduced, "We have found that the navies of major countries are interested in unmanned autonomous vessels, which are more than just remotely controlled vessels. These vessels provide a way to increase operational capabilities, reduce personnel risks, and lower construction and operating costs. In about the next 10 years, Rolls-Royce will launch medium-sized unmanned platforms, especially in the leading naval field, as this concept will develop fleets combining manned and unmanned vessels. With our experience and capabilities, we hope to maintain industry leadership."
According to Rolls-Royce's plan, the future hope is to integrate large, manually operated vessels with smaller unmanned vessels. Large, manually operated vessels will be able to perform multiple tasks, while unmanned vessels will perform single tasks. This combination will provide the naval fleet with operational and cost benefits.
In the initial stages, the unmanned concept vessel will be equipped with an all-electric propulsion system, requiring fewer auxiliary systems (lubrication, cooling systems), and improving reliability. Equipped with 2 MTU 4000 series Generators sets, it can provide approximately 4 megawatts of power to the 1.5-megawatt propulsion drive. A small turbine can also be used to replace the diesel engine, further improving system reliability and reducing maintenance. The permanent magnet Azipull propeller and bow thruster configuration will give the concept vessel high maneuverability. To reduce fuel consumption and extend operational range, the vessel will also be equipped with a 3000-kilowatt energy storage system and solar panels to provide power when the vessel is moored and on standby.
Unmanned autonomous operation requires increased reliability of power and propulsion systems, as there is no one on board to immediately repair any malfunctions. In response, Rolls-Royce said it will prioritize the development of more reliable power and propulsion systems to reduce unresolved maintenance issues. This means adjusting the mechanical design, and Rolls-Royce is also developing a set of automated support tools, such as energy management equipment health Monitoring and predictive remote maintenance to ensure the availability of unmanned vessels.
In fact, there are already many technologies for unmanned vessels. Rolls-Royce has developed the world's first intelligent awareness system, combining multiple AI-powered Sensors to help merchant ships operate more safely and efficiently. To avoid potential cyber risks, Rolls-Royce has conducted in-depth analysis to ensure terminal security.
