Petrobras recently announced that it will build six new offshore oil platforms in 2017.
In its current investment plan, Petrobras stated that the total investment for the six new platforms could reach US\$6 billion. Including two offshore platforms currently under tender, Petrobras plans to receive and put into operation eight new platforms by 2021.
Solange Guedes, Petrobras' exploration and production director, said that another 11 offshore platforms currently under construction are expected to be put into operation in 2019.
Petrobras recently announced a five-year plan with capital expenditures of US\$74.1 billion, hoping to gradually increase oil production. The investment amount is 25% less than previously announced. In recent years, factors such as corruption scandals, government regulations, and low oil prices have severely impacted Petrobras, resulting in significant losses, forcing it to refocus on its core business.
Guedes reiterated that if Brazilian domestic builders are too expensive or slow in construction, Petrobras may prefer to use foreign builders. In recent years, the Brazilian government has required Petrobras to increase its reliance on Brazilian suppliers.
