Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea is building the world's currently largest vessel. The ship, the giant offshore construction vessel "Pieter Schelte," was ordered by Allseas of Switzerland for a sum of £1 billion ($1.7 billion). The vessel is 382 meters long, equivalent to the height of the Empire State Building, and 127 meters wide, equivalent to the height of the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben).

The "Pieter Schelte" will be equipped with 13 Rolls-Royce 5.5 MW thrusters ( Product Library   Acquisition   Supply ), linked to 11.2 MW engines ( Product Library   Acquisition   Supply ). The vessel can lift not only 48,000-ton drilling platforms ( ship type   shipyard   Trading ) topside modules, but also simultaneously lift 25,000-ton jackets. The "Pieter Schelte" can be used to transport drilling platform topsides and bottoms from one location to another simultaneously, i.e., moving them in and out of ports. Both the legs and the main structure of a drilling platform can be loaded and transported simultaneously on this vessel. To meet the needs of transporting extremely heavy drilling platforms, the vessel can even be raised and lowered 25 meters in the water. The "Pieter Schelte" has a cruising speed of 14 knots and can accommodate 571 crew members.

After commissioning, the "Pieter Schelte" will also become the world's largest pipe-laying vessel ( ship type   shipyard   Trading ), and will be used for the construction of subsea infrastructure. The "Pieter Schelte's" pipe-laying capacity is 2,000 tons, double that of Allseas' previous largest pipe-laying vessel, the "Solitaire." Allseas says that the "Pieter Schelte" will be deployed for offshore operations next year and will retain its title as the world's largest vessel for the next six years. By 2020, Allseas will deploy an even larger offshore construction vessel to install and transport even larger drilling platforms.

To date, the 400-meter-long Maersk Line 3E-class vessels built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering still hold the record for the world's longest ships. container ships ( ship type   shipyard   Trading ).
