According to Shipbuilding and Ocean Daily News reports that Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea has been rated as the "world's safest shipyard" in an assessment by the UK marine insurance industry.
On October 19, Samsung Heavy Industries stated that the company received an A rating for the second consecutive time in the ship construction risk assessment (JH143 Survey) conducted by the Joint Hull Committee (JHC), a group of UK marine insurance companies in London.
Only three companies received an A rating in this assessment: Samsung Heavy Industries, Germany's Meyer Werft, etc. Samsung Heavy Industries is the only one to have received an A rating twice in a row.
The JHC is an alliance of several British marine insurance companies formed in 1910, and has gained authority and recognition over its 100-year history.
In 2003, many shipyards around the world experienced frequent fires and crane ( product library purchase request supply collapses, etc. Therefore, the JHC decided to conduct regular ship construction risk assessments, which have served as a reference in determining insurance rates.
The ship construction risk assessment for shipyards includes 13 items, including emergency response, fire extinguishing capabilities, safety standards and procedures. Ratings are assigned after inspections of the shipyard's safety and quality management systems and rigorous on-site investigations.
The A rating received by Samsung Heavy Industries is the highest level, signifying that "the risk of accidents is extremely low, and safety conditions cannot be further improved." The company's safety management system and employees' high safety awareness have been recognized by the insurance industry.
Samsung Heavy Industries applies for insurance on ships built at the shipyard every July. The company's A rating in this assessment is expected to give them a favorable position in insurance premium negotiations.
