Amer Shipping (ASL), a company under the UK's Foresight Group, recently announced its plan to order 6 ultramax bulk carriers within the next six months, with hopes for these vessels to begin delivery in 2016.

According to TradeWinds, Amulya Mohapatra, the company's newbuilding project manager, confirmed that the company is currently in shipbuilding negotiations with Chinese shipyards, but has not yet disclosed the specific shipyards.

The estimated cost for these newbuilds is US$25 million per vessel, a decrease of US$2 million compared to the 64,000 DWT eco-friendly bulk carriers (8 vessels) ordered by Turkish shipowner Kiran Holdings from Zhejiang Yangfan Shipyard in October this year.

Mohapatra stated that ASL plans to deploy these vessels for India's coal import trade, noting that traders prefer to use ultramax vessels for dry bulk transportation in India. As India's coal imports are expected to increase from the current 1.25 million tons per year to 2 million tons by 2016, domestic shipowners in India are currently planning to expand their fleets.
