China considers allowing Valemax to dock

It is understood that China may relax restrictions on 400,000-ton bulk carriers docking at Chinese ports. Currently, the Chinese government is negotiating amendments to port docking safety regulations.
The Ministry of Transport of China recently sent a letter to the China Ship Owners' Association, China Ports Association, Pilotage Association, Maritime Safety Administration, and relevant government departments and local ports, requesting a response by September 6. The Ministry stated that future administrative measures will reflect coastal vessel safety berthing requirements, aiming to ensure ports can keep pace with the trend of larger vessels while ensuring safe operations.
Several suggestions include that the tonnage of vessels berthing at port terminals should not exceed the design tonnage of the berthing vessel type, and that reconsideration of berthing should be allowed for vessels exceeding 300,000 DWT that meet safety conditions.
In addition, Brazil's Vale company is undertaking a newbuilding and refit project for a total of 35 vessels of 380,000-400,000 DWT. Chinese ports, for the sake of regional revitalization, and the Chinese steel industry, to save on steel transportation costs, are taking a relatively positive attitude towards the Valemax berthing issue.
