Delivery of ultra-large container ships creates a 'waterfall effect'

Over the past year, a large number of newly built container ships, mainly ultra-large container vessels, have been delivered, with those over 10,000 TEU accounting for approximately 35%.

According to Alphaliner statistics, approximately 1.275 million TEU of newly built container ships were delivered from July 2012 to June 2013.

Half of this, 622,000 TEU, were deployed on the Far East-Europe route.

In particular, approximately 33 ultra-large container vessels of 10,000 TEU or more, including the recently delivered 18,200 TEU "Maersk McKinney Moller", totaling 442,000 TEU, were delivered.

However, taking the Far East-Europe route as an example, due to decreased demand, existing vessels of a similar scale to the newly added ones were transferred to other routes, creating a cascading effect on multiple routes.
