On May 30, local time, a bulk carrier exploded and caught fire outside the port of Jorf Lasfar, Morocco, resulting in at least 7 crew deaths and multiple injuries.

According to maritime industry sources, the vessel involved is the "Toro Rosso," a 91,384-ton bulk carrier built in 1997 and flying the Panamanian flag. Data from COSCO SHIPPING's Vessel Insight shows that the ship departed Ningbo-Zhoushan Port on April 8 for Jorf Lasfar, Morocco, arriving on May 30 at 3 PM. The ship's AIS stopped updating at 00:00 on May 31.

According to SNRTnews, the Moroccan national television news channel, on the afternoon of May 30, the "Toro Rosso" experienced an engine explosion and subsequent fire while anchored approximately 10.8 kilometers from the port. There were 28 crew members on board, mostly Syrians.

After receiving a distress signal from the crew, the Moroccan navy immediately dispatched rescue personnel to the scene. After extinguishing the fire, rescuers began searching for those who had fallen overboard. Due to the distance from the shore, a helicopter was also used in the rescue operation.

According to Moroccan authorities, as of May 31, the accident has resulted in 7 deaths and 18 injuries. Seriously injured crew members have been transported to private hospitals in Jorf Lasfar and Casablanca for treatment.

According to preliminary investigations, the accident was caused by an electrical fault in the "Toro Rosso's" engine, leading to an explosion. Moroccan authorities are currently conducting a further investigation into the cause of the accident.

Equasis, a shipping open database, shows that the registered owner and ship/commercial management company of the "Toro Rosso" is NORTHERN MARINE SHIPPING SA of Panama. The ISM management company has been unknown since November 12, 2023. The ship's last inspection was in 2022, when it was detained due to multiple safety issues.

Reports indicate that the "Toro Rosso" was scheduled to load a shipment of fertilizer at Jorf Lasfar Port, a major fertilizer export port in Monaco. Jorf Lasfar Port is currently on "high" alert. Vessel Insight data shows that there are currently 32 vessels scheduled to arrive, 15 berthed, and 8 at anchor.
