Global first! COSCO's container ship will be retrofitted with methanol dual fuel

Recently, COSCO SHIPPING Holdings and COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry officially signed contracts for the methanol dual-fuel conversion of 2 existing 13800TEU and 2 20000TEU container ships. This is the world's first dual-fuel conversion project simultaneously involving MAN main engines and WARTSILA auxiliary engines.

As the shipping industry's decarbonization process accelerates, while shipping companies order new alternative fuel vessels, the conversion of existing ships to dual-fuel engines has also become a focus of industry attention, with huge market potential for dual-fuel ship conversions.

Dual-fuel vessels refer to ships that can operate by arbitrarily choosing clean energy fuels (such as LNG, methanol, ammonia, etc.) or traditional fuels. Considering conversion and operating costs, as well as technological maturity, green methanol offers more advantages compared to LNG and ammonia. After the conversion of the 4 ships, approximately 360,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced annually, helping to achieve the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" goals.

According to the contract, the first vessel will undergo conversion in mid-2025. The implementation of this project not only provides an optional path for the company's fleet to develop towards green and low-carbon transformation but also extends the operating life of the existing fleet and achieves fuel flexibility.

It is understood that during the China International Maritime Exhibition in December last year, Shanghai COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry, MAN Energy Solutions, and Wärtsilä Corporation respectively signed contracts for the world's first MAN S90 main engine and W32 engine methanol dual-fuel conversion projects. These are for the "2+2+Optional 9" traditional fuel container ships that Shanghai COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry is about to undertake, to be converted into methanol dual-fuel powered vessels.

Shanghai COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry stated at the time that this was the world's first EPCIC contract for the methanol dual-fuel conversion of large container ships, including both MAN main engines and WARTSILA auxiliary engines in the conversion. Specifically, Shanghai COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry is responsible for the design of the methanol dual-fuel conversion, the modification of the MAN B&W main engine, the conversion of dual-fuel generators, and the procurement of methanol fuel systems. They will also modify the methanol fuel tanks, pipelines, fuel supply systems, and other related structures, and are responsible for the installation of relevant equipment, system debugging, and sea trial delivery.
