Epoch-making technology! Hyundai Heavy Industries launches the world's first lashing-free container ship

“Lashing-free container ships” represent a groundbreaking technology that fundamentally eliminates lashing-related operations and the resulting cargo losses, a major concern in the container shipping industry. Going forward, to maintain a competitive edge in the fierce bidding environment, the company will strive to develop more differentiated, market-leading technologies,” said Joo Won-ho, Chief Technology Officer of Hyundai Heavy Industries.
On November 1, Hyundai Heavy Industries' "Lashing-Free" container ship received design approval certificates from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Liberian flag state administration. This is the world's first container ship that eliminates the need for container securing operations, a revolutionary technology that once again puts Hyundai Heavy Industries ahead of its competitors in container ship construction.
Traditionally, to maximize container loading on container ships, containers are loaded inside the cargo hold, the hatch covers are closed, and then containers are loaded onto the hatch covers. During container ship transport, multiple layers of containers stacked above the hatch covers and exposed to the open air require lashing to corresponding lashing bridges using lashing rods to ensure the safe and stable stacking of containers.
Hyundai Heavy Industries' "lashing-free container ship" uses a new device called "Portable Bench" (trademark: Sky BenchV2). This device can withstand the load of containers loaded on the upper deck and transfer it to the hull structure. Without lashing bridges and hatch covers, the guide device that restricts the range of container movement extends to the deck. Containers loaded on the upper deck are secured according to the extended guide device, eliminating the need for lashing.
Hyundai Heavy Industries stated that using the "Portable Bench" device eliminates time-consuming and costly container lashing operations, promising to significantly improve the convenience and efficiency of container loading and unloading. In addition, containers on the deck are secured within the guide device structure, providing more stable fixation than existing lashing bridge structures. This prevents containers from falling or being lost overboard during rough seas, and fundamentally prevents safety accidents during lashing operations.
It is understood that Hyundai Heavy Industries has completed domestic and international patent applications for the "lashing-free container ship" and "Portable Bench".
Darren Leskoski, President of ABS Far East Asia, said: “The 'lashing-free container ship' technology is a revolutionary technology that improves the safety and efficiency of container ship operations. ABS is pleased to have taken another step forward in the development of container loading technology through collaboration with Hyundai Heavy Industries and the Liberian flag state administration.”
Thomas Klenum, Vice President of the Liberian flag state administration, said: “Lashing-free container ships can contribute to the safety and environmental protection of ship operations and improve the efficiency of container loading and unloading. Hyundai Heavy Industries has demonstrated continuously improved design safety and competitive advantages through the development of new technologies and innovative designs.”
