Huanghai Shipbuilding has received orders for four more 1800TEU feeder container ships. With the 1800TEU container ship as its main ship type, Huanghai Shipbuilding has quickly become a "star" shipyard in the global feeder ship construction market.
On June 17, Seatrade, a professional refrigerated transport company, announced that it had placed an order with Huanghai Shipbuilding for four high-specification 1800TEU feeder container ships. The new ships will adopt the SDARI SEALION 1800 BKK-class environmentally friendly design, can accommodate approximately 13,000 pallets, and have high refrigeration capacity. The four ships are expected to be delivered successively starting in October 2023.
Seatrade stated that this order marks another important step in the further development of its services and logistics systems specifically for the transport of perishable goods. These four specialized refrigerated container ships will be used in existing and newly developed trades and will form part of the FDD (Fast, Direct, and Dedicated) concept developed by Seatrade in recent years.
The company pointed out that the transportation time and related indirect costs of refrigerated services currently operated by large container shipping companies are increasing, so there is still a clear market demand for FDD services operated by specialized refrigerated vessels, specialized container ships, and combination vessels. In addition to the latest order, Seatrade is also seeking opportunities to order more new vessels and/or acquire second-hand vessels, and to establish potential strategic alliances with potential customer groups and/or third-party shipowners to expand its fleet size.
It is understood that the 1800TEU container ship has become another representative ship type that Huanghai Shipbuilding has undertaken in large quantities, following multipurpose heavy-lift ships and large luxury passenger-roll-on/roll-off ships. The 1800TEU container ship has a relatively balanced and ideal performance in terms of loading capacity, port berthing, and seaworthiness. To cope with the expansion of the shipping market and the increasingly diversified routes, many shipping companies at home and abroad have used this type of ship as the mainstay of feeder container transportation, and market demand is strong.
Since 2021, Huanghai Shipbuilding has seized this opportunity for change, proactively connecting with major shipping companies at home and abroad, and actively seeking new market share. Ultimately, relying on its strong technical strength and strong brand reputation, it has won the trust of customers. To date, it has signed contracts with domestic and foreign shipowners for more than 30 1800TEU container ship orders. Huanghai Shipbuilding's 1800TEU container ships are 172 meters long, 28.4 meters wide, have a deadweight of 24,000 tons, and have many advantages such as fast speed and short shipping cycles.
By adopting new technologies and a total assembly shipbuilding model, Huanghai Shipbuilding can reduce the construction cycle of this type of ship by more than 5%. As experience in the construction process and on-site management of this type of ship matures, the construction cycle of subsequent batch 1800TEU ships is expected to be shortened to less than 10 months.
According to Clarkson's data, in the current feeder container ship market below 3000TEU, Huanghai Shipbuilding ranks fourth globally in terms of backlog orders, with a total of 33 ships, second only to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (66 ships), Guangzhou Shipyard International (46 ships), and Mawei Shipbuilding (34 ships). If the latest four ships from Seatrade are added, Huanghai Shipbuilding's backlog will exceed that of Mawei Shipbuilding.
Since the beginning of this year, Huanghai Shipbuilding has seized opportunities in the overseas shipping market, increased technological innovation, and expanded its shipbuilding field, leading to good development momentum. To date, Huanghai Shipbuilding has approximately 60 shipbuilding orders in hand, including 1800TEU container ships, Antarctic krill fishing and processing vessels, luxury cruise ships, multipurpose cargo ships, various ocean-going fishing vessels, and law enforcement vessels. The total contract value is nearly 7 billion yuan, nearly three times that of the same period last year, and contracts have been scheduled until the end of 2024.
