Leveraging its cooperative advantage with Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding, Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, has successfully secured orders for four 66,000 DWT bulk carriers.

Recently, Jiangsu Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Meghna Group, one of the largest conglomerates in Bangladesh, successfully signed a construction contract for four 66,000 DWT bulk carriers via video conference and cloud signing. This vessel type is based on the design of Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding of Japan and will be built at Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding, with all deliveries planned for completion from the second half of 2022 to the first half of 2023.

This vessel type is the 66,000 DWT (Type 66) bulk carrier, a wide and shallow-draft model from Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding's "neo series" of environmentally friendly, low-fuel consumption ships. Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding currently has a delivery record of over 20 such vessels. The vessel has an overall length of approximately 199.99 meters, a length between perpendiculars of 192.90 meters, a molded breadth of 36.00 meters, a molded depth of 18.45 meters, a design draft of 11.20 meters, and a scantling draft of 12.92 meters. It is classified by ClassNK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai) and flies the Bangladeshi flag.

This marks the first time Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding will construct bulk carriers designed by Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding. According to Clarkson data, Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding currently primarily builds 82,000 DWT Kamsarmax bulk carriers, all designed by Barpocean Marine Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group. Additionally, their orderbook includes only one 31,800 DWT bulk carrier designed by Deltamarin.

It's worth noting that on December 28 last year, Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding signed its first drawing supply agreement with Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding, providing Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding with drawings for the 66,000 DWT (Type 66) bulk carrier designed by Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding, and will collect licensing fees when Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding constructs the relevant vessels.

As per the agreement, Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding will be entitled to a certain licensing fee for each vessel of this type built by Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding. The reason for making "neo66BC" the first vessel type under the drawing supply agreement is that as Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding's sales activities progressed, new shipbuilding inquiries were attracted from Asian shipowners who own and evaluate Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding's Type 66 bulk carriers. At the time, sources stated that Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding was expected to receive orders for multiple vessels of the same type in the near future.

In addition to "neo66BC", Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding's "neo series" bulk carrier designs also include Type 56 "neo56BC", Type 60 "neo60BC", Type 87 "neo87BC", and Type 182 "neo182BC". Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding intends to expand the scope of the drawing supply agreement based on the progress of Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding's sales activities.

It is understood that Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding was established as a joint venture by Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding (a subsidiary of Mitsui E&S Holdings), Mitsui & Co., and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, and commenced operations in October 2019.

It officially commenced operations in October. Previously, Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding had clearly stated that Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding would begin undertaking orders for various types of bulk carriers designed by Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding.

In addition to bulk carriers, Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding also plans to build MR product tankers, medium- and small-sized LNG carriers, and other energy transport vessels in the future.
