Recently, Jiangnan Shipyard, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Group Corporation, signed a contract with AW SHIPPING LIMITIED for the construction of three 86,000 cubic meter very large liquefied gas carriers (VLGCs). The "Jiangnan China-type" LPG vessel brand, independently developed and built by Chinese shipyards, has once again achieved success.
This type of vessel is a LPG dual-fuel main engine independently researched and designed by Jiangnan Shipyard. The engine will be further upgraded to meet the new IGC Code, Tier III emission standards, and the latest SOx emission requirements, featuring energy efficiency and environmental protection. It has an overall length of 230 meters, a molded breadth of 36.6 meters, a molded depth of 22.2 meters, and a design draft of 11.5 meters. According to the plan, these three VLGCs will be delivered in the third and fourth quarters of 2022.
AW Shipping Limited is a joint venture established by Wanhua Chemical and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), providing transportation capacity for the cooperation projects between Wanhua and ADNOC.
Wanhua Chemical Group Co., Ltd. is a global chemical new material company that consistently adheres to technological innovation as its core competitiveness. It continuously optimizes its industrial structure, with businesses covering polyurethane industrial clusters such as MDI, TDI, and polyether polyols; petrochemical industrial clusters such as acrylic acid and esters, and propylene oxide; and functional chemicals and materials industrial clusters such as water-based PUD, PA emulsion, TPU, and ADI series. In the production field, the three major production bases in Yantai, Ningbo, and Zhuhai in China operate stably, and it has its own overseas production base - BC Company in Hungary. In the R&D field, R&D centers in Yantai, Beijing, Ningbo, and Shanghai have gradually taken shape, and the North American Technology Center was officially put into use in Houston in 2017. In addition, Wanhua Chemical has companies and offices in more than ten countries and regions including Europe, the United States, and Japan.
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), established in 1971, is the state-owned oil company of the United Arab Emirates. It possesses some of the world's highest-quality crude oil and leading production technologies, accounting for over 96% of the UAE's total oil production, with an annual output value of US$30 billion.
Delivered 84,000 cubic meter VLGC
In 2012, Jiangnan Shipyard independently developed an 83,000 cubic meter VLGC and undertook an order for 2+2+2 83K VLGCs from Seatankers Group in the same year. This was the first time that a Chinese shipyard had undertaken a VLGC order, breaking the monopoly of Japanese and South Korean shipbuilders.
Subsequently, Jiangnan Shipyard upgraded and improved this product, making improvements to the hull lines and cargo capacity. Following the 83,000 cubic meter vessel, it successively developed products such as 84,000 cubic meters, 86,000 cubic meters, and 91,000 cubic meters, opening up the international mainstream market.
Since 2013, Jiangnan Shipyard has positioned VLGCs as one of the directions for product structural transformation and upgrading. Over seven years, Jiangnan Shipyard has continuously made breakthroughs, achieving the design, research, and development, and construction of VLGC series vessels from 83,000 cubic meters to 86,000 cubic meters, establishing the "Jiangnan China-type" LPG vessel brand. Currently, Jiangnan Shipyard is the only shipyard in China that possesses the full range of R&D, design, and construction capabilities for liquefied gas carriers.
This year, Jiangnan Shipyard has achieved remarkable results in the VLGC field. To date, Jiangnan Shipyard has delivered 6 84,000 cubic meter VLGCs this year, with another 2 to be delivered before the end of the year. Regarding 86,000 cubic meter VLGCs, in addition to the 3 recently signed, another 7 are under construction.
