Hyundai Heavy Industries Group has become the world's first company to apply autonomous navigation technology to vessels in operation, with future goals of dominating the unmanned ship market.

On April 9, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group announced that the "Hyundai Intelligent Navigation Assistance System" (HiNAS), jointly developed with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), has been successfully installed on a 250,000-ton bulk carrier belonging to South Korean shipping company SK Shipping.

This advanced navigation assistance system uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to analyze video images from shipboard cameras to determine the risk of collision with nearby vessels and issue notifications via augmented reality (AR). Infrared cameras can locate obstacles and measure their speed even at night or in heavy fog.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group developed the Integrated Smart Ship Solution (ISS) in 2017, an Internet of Things (IoT) platform for ships that provides efficient energy management solutions and finds optimal routes, and has received over 150 orders.

In addition, Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that it has completed the development of the "Hyundai Intelligent Berthing Assistance System" (HiBAS), which provides a panoramic view during ship berthing.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group aims to dominate the autonomous ship market. According to Acute Market Reports, a global market intelligence service, the autonomous navigation technology and by-product market is expected to grow by 12.8% annually, reaching US$150 billion by 2025.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group stated: "Autonomous navigation vessels are the future of the maritime industry, combining multiple core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including the Internet of Things, big data, and artificial intelligence. Our goal is to accelerate the arrival of the autonomous navigation era through proactive R&D and secure dominance in this emerging market."
