On December 22, the naming ceremony was held for the world's largest LNG-powered bulk carrier, built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. This 50,000-ton deadweight bulk carrier, named "Green Iris," is the world's largest LNG-powered vessel and the first LNG-powered bulk carrier in South Korea.

South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated that this eco-friendly LNG-powered bulk carrier will begin operations next year. The "Green Iris" will transport limestone for POSCO (Pohang Iron and Steel Company) from Donghae City, Gangwon-do to Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do. The vessel will refuel at the Donghae City port via a supply vessel from Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS).

The "Green Iris" is also the world's first vessel to be equipped with a fuel tank made of high-manganese steel. This high-manganese steel material, developed by POSCO after 10 years of research, can transport and store LNG at ultra-low temperatures of -196 degrees Celsius.

LNG is considered one of the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly fuel options for ships. A South Korean government official stated that LNG will become the main fuel choice for future vessels, and the South Korean government will strongly support the expansion of the LNG supply system and the research and development of new materials such as high-manganese steel.
