August 24, Guangzhou Shipyard International At the launching ceremony of the last ship from berth No.1 at the Liwan shipyard of Guangzhou Shipyard International, the leadership team of Guangzhou Shipyard International collectively recited a long poem titled "Carrying Glory, Setting Sail."

At noon on August 24, berth No. 1 at the Liwan shipyard of Guangzhou Shipyard International welcomed its final "performance": As the 50,000-ton chemical/refined oil tanker No. 2, built for Swedish Wisby Shipping Company, slid into the water, berth No. 1 completed its historical mission. This was also the last ship launching from this shipyard. This also means that all the berths in the old shipyard of Guangzhou Shipyard International have ended their historical missions.

It is understood that the Liwan shipyard of Guangzhou Shipyard International, founded in the 1950s, had one 40,000-ton berth, two 60,000-ton berths, and one 50,000-ton dry dock. Over the decades, berth No. 1 of Guangzhou Shipyard International has created many "firsts": The first guided missile destroyer in South China was launched here; the first 10,000-ton ship in South China—the 13,000-ton freighter "Liaoyang"—was launched here; the 38,800-ton bulk carrier —"Ning'an 16"—created a record cycle of "56 days" for both the berth and the wharf; China's first semi-submersible vessel —the 18,000-ton semi-submersible vessel "Taiankou"—was launched here.

Han Guangde, chairman and party secretary of Guangzhou Shipyard International, pointed out that since the establishment of Guangzhou Shipyard (the predecessor of Guangzhou Shipyard International) on August 1, 1954, Guangzhou Shipyard people have been working hard on this land for 63 years. In 1958, berths No. 1 and No. 2 began construction; in 1982, berth No. 3 began construction; afterwards, the three berths were expanded several times, forming the current shipbuilding capacity.

According to retired workers from the older generation of the shipyard, in the 1950s, shortly after liberation, the industrial foundation of the newly established China was weak. In order to maintain the security of the South China Sea, it was decided to build a shipyard in Guangzhou. The employees of the shipyard relied on self-reliance and built the shipyard brick by brick with their own hands.

It is understood that the three berths of the Liwan shipyard of Guangzhou Shipyard International are all longitudinal slipways. Slipways have a certain inclination, and because the Liwan shipyard is located in a narrow section of the Pearl River with shallow water, the slipway cannot be used for launching ships over 50,000 tons, and the berth cannot be further expanded, limiting the scale and efficiency of shipbuilding. This is one of the reasons for the transfer and relocation of Guangzhou Shipyard International's production capacity. The shipbuilding production platform line located in the Nansha shipyard of Guangzhou Shipyard International is a horizontal transfer-type berth.

From this year onwards, the shipyard will gradually cease shipbuilding production and transfer its shipbuilding capacity to the China Shipbuilding Longxue Shipbuilding base in Guangzhou's Nansha District, with the relocation expected to be completed before 2018. Before that, berths No. 2 and No. 3 of the Liwan shipyard have already completed their last ship launchings and closed down successively. Thus, all the berths in the old shipyard of Guangzhou Shipyard International have left the historical stage. Currently, only one dry dock in the shipyard is still building ships, and it is expected to be launched in mid-September.
