The world's largest floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility, Prelude FLNG, has officially departed Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje shipyard, setting sail for the Prelude oil field off Western Australia. The entire voyage is expected to take approximately 4 weeks.
According to AIS data provided by MarineTraffic, in the early hours of June 29, the FLNG departed Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje shipyard and is expected to arrive at its destination around July 30, a voyage of approximately 5800 kilometers. Shell later confirmed in a brief statement that Prelude FLNG has set sail.
Prelude FLNG is 489 meters long, 74 meters wide, and weighs 256,000 tons, roughly the size of four soccer fields. The FLNG has a full load displacement of approximately 600,000 tons, with steel alone accounting for about 260,000 tons. Prelude FLNG is capable of producing 3.6 million tons of LNG, 1.3 million tons of condensate, and 400,000 tons of LPG annually. Previously, Shell had stated that Prelude FLNG would commence production in 2018.
The Prelude FLNG built by Samsung Heavy Industries for Shell is the world's first FLNG project. Construction began in 2012, with cumulative construction costs exceeding 12.5 billion USD, and it is designed to withstand Category 5 hurricanes. POSH Terasea, a joint venture of Singapore's PACC Offshore Services, will be responsible for towing Prelude FLNG from South Korea to Australia, a journey of approximately 4800 kilometers.
POSH Terasea will use 5 vessels to complete the towing operation, including anchor handling tugboats "Terasea Osprey", "Terasea Falcon", "Terasea Hawk", "Terasea Eagle", and the 16000 BHP multipurpose vessel (AHTS) "POSH Champion".
Upon arrival at its destination, Prelude FLNG will be moored at the Prelude oil and gas field in the Browse LNG basin, approximately 108 nautical miles off the northwest coast of Australia.
