Due to the continuous increase in new shipbuilding business this year, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group's latest order backlog has once again surpassed Daewoo Shipbuilding, reclaiming the top global spot after 11 months. Thanks to a surge in cruise ship orders, the Italian Fincantieri Group's order backlog has rapidly climbed to fifth globally and is expected to surpass Samsung Heavy Industries.

Clarksons data shows that as of early May, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group's order backlog totaled 7.093 million CGT, ranking first globally. This marks the first time Hyundai Heavy Industries has regained the top global position since June 2016. Close behind is Daewoo Shipbuilding, with an order backlog of 6.26 million CGT.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group's order backlog had fallen to third globally in December last year. In the first four months of this year, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group (including Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, and Hyundai Ulsan Shipyard) secured a total of 15 new ship orders, totaling US$1.4 billion, including 13 oil tankers . In April alone, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group received 18 new ship orders totaling US$900 million. Including optional orders, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group received a total of 31 ships with US$1.5 billion in new ship orders in April. So far this year, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group has received a total of US$2.3 billion in new ship orders for 39 ships, the highest level since 2014.

The top 10 shipbuilding groups globally have a total order backlog of 990 ships, totaling 37.901 million CGT, accounting for approximately one-third of the global order backlog.
