A serious crane collapse accident occurred this afternoon at a shipyard owned by Samsung Heavy Industries, resulting in 5 deaths and 20 injuries.
According to the latest news from Korean media, the accident occurred around 2:25 pm today (May 1st). A 50-meter-tall, 32-ton tower crane at Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje shipyard in South Gyeongsang Province collided with a large gantry crane, causing the tower crane to collapse onto a ship under construction. The accident resulted in the death of 5 workers on site, with 6 others seriously injured and 14 sustaining minor injuries. The injured have been sent to three nearby hospitals.
Police have determined that the accident was caused by improper operation, and a detailed investigation into the incident is underway. Police stated that the possibility of more people being trapped under the crane cannot be ruled out, and the number of casualties may increase. The accident site remains chaotic, with police and firefighters rescuing other possible victims trapped at the scene.
A senior executive at Samsung Heavy Industries stated that such a serious accident has never occurred in the past several years. Handling this accident is now Samsung Heavy Industries' top priority, and the company will release an official statement later.
According to International Ship Network, Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje shipyard is currently building a series of ultra-large container ships. On March 15th, Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje shipyard held a naming ceremony for the "MOL Triumph," the first 20150TEU container ship built for MOL (Mitsui O.S.K. Lines). This is one of the largest container ships in the world to date. Nine more 20,000 TEU large container ships are scheduled for delivery this year, including two 21100TEU container ships, the world's largest, to be delivered to Orient Overseas.
