On March 28, Daewoo Shipbuilding announced the successful delivery of the icebreaking LNG carrier "Christophe de Margerie" built for Russian shipowner Sovcomflot. This is also the world's first Arctic-dedicated (ARC7 ice class) icebreaking LNG carrier.

In 2014, Sovcomflot signed a contract with Daewoo Shipbuilding for the construction of the world's first icebreaking LNG carrier. In the same year, Daewoo Shipbuilding received orders for a total of 15 icebreaking LNG carriers from Russia, Japan, and Canada, with a total value of approximately US\$4.8 billion.

The "Christophe de Margerie" is 299 meters long and 50 meters wide, capable of transporting 173,600 cubic meters of LNG, with a construction cost of approximately US\$320 million. After delivery, this icebreaking LNG carrier will serve the Yamal LNG project in Western Siberia.

It is understood that the ship's name is in memory of Christophe de Margerie, the former CEO of Total, who died in a tragic plane crash in 2014. The "Christophe de Margerie" has an Arc7 ice class notation, allowing it to navigate ice up to 2.1 meters thick. The bow and stern are covered with 70mm thick steel plates and can withstand temperatures as low as -52 degrees Celsius.

The delivery of the "Christophe de Margerie" was originally scheduled for June 2016. However, last May, Daewoo Shipbuilding issued a statement that the delivery of the "Christophe de Margerie" would be postponed to January 2017, without disclosing the specific reasons.

After the delivery of the "Christophe de Margerie", Daewoo Shipbuilding will receive a final payment of 240 billion won (approximately US\$215 million). Daewoo Shipbuilding plans to deliver the remaining 14 icebreaking LNG carriers before 2020. The owners of these 14 icebreaking LNG carriers are MOL (3 vessels), Teekay (6 vessels), and Dynagas (5 vessels).
