The ECO MR tanker, boasting the world's best energy efficiency, has secured a construction contract with American Seabulk Tankers (a subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings), following a similar agreement with American Petroleum Tankers (APT).
This vessel type, developed by DSEC, a subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries, will be constructed at the NASSCO shipyard (National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, a subsidiary of General Dynamics Group) in the United States (construction contract signed on September 10). DSEC will provide the shipyard with the design and materials for two MR tankers.
The shipowner is Seabulk Tankers, currently operating a fleet of over 180 vessels, ranking it as the third largest in the United States. The vessel will be classed by ABS (American Bureau of Shipping).
The ECO MR tankers to be built are similar to DSEC's latest ECO MR tanker design. They incorporate MAN B&W G-type Slow-speed engines from MDT, achieving the world's lowest daily fuel consumption. They also feature a cutting-edge 'LNG-Ready' design, allowing for easy conversion to LNG propulsion in the future. This reduces fuel costs and enhances environmental friendliness, crucial under increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
