Beautiful American Billionaire Investor Wilbur Ross (founder of WL Ross & Co.) stated that the growth rate of the global merchant fleet has significantly slowed, and the shipping industry is expected to recover next year.

Against this backdrop, he also stated that he will be making more investments in the shipping industry in the future.

On May 20 (local time), in an interview with Bloomberg TV, he said, "We will be making more investments in ships in the future."

He also stated, "Although the current shipping market is still affected by overcapacity caused by excessive orders from several years ago, the market is likely to start showing signs of recovery in 2014. He also stated, "We are actually very satisfied with the investments we have made in the shipping industry."

In 2011, Ross, the company founder, along with a private equity fund, invested a total of US$900 million to acquire 30 tankers. He is also a major shareholder of Navigator Holdings, which currently owns 1/3 of the world's mid-sized LPG carriers.

According to Clarkson and the Baltic Exchange in London, the annual charter rate for 20,500 CBM LPG carriers has increased by 15% in the past year; the spot freight rate for very large gas carriers (VLGCs) has increased significantly by 47% in May, reaching its highest level since September last year; and the daily freight rate for 37,000 DWT product carriers (PC) on the Europe-US route has also increased by 16% this year.

According to Clarkson, in March, the global overcapacity of merchant ships reached approximately 20%, with the supply-demand imbalance being the most severe since the early 1980s. However, the growth rate of the merchant fleet next year will only be 3.6%, the lowest level since 2009.
