On the morning of March 8th, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, came to the Jiangsu delegation of the First Session of the Twelfth National People's Congress to discuss the government work report with the representatives.
Ni Tao, a deputy to the National People's Congress and general manager of Nantong COSCO Ship Engineering Co., Ltd., spoke at the meeting. Ni Tao briefed the General Secretary on the current situation and development prospects of the global offshore engineering market, the current situation and major problems of China's offshore engineering equipment manufacturing industry, and his thoughts on accelerating the development of China's offshore engineering equipment manufacturing industry. He said that in recent years, COSCO Ship Engineering, where he works, has seized opportunities, driven the company's transformation and development through technological innovation, completed the product transformation and upgrading from ship repair to offshore engineering equipment manufacturing, successfully designed and built a number of world-leading first-of-its-kind offshore engineering products, and has become a world-renowned offshore engineering design and construction enterprise.
Ni Tao told the General Secretary that as early as 2006, COSCO Ship Engineering had focused on the global market, introducing more than 30 overseas experts to establish the company's offshore engineering R&D center, creating conditions and laying the foundation for the company's successful transformation and upgrading and entry into offshore engineering manufacturing. In 2009, COSCO Ship Engineering's world's first cylindrical ultra-deepwater ocean drilling platform, "Hope No. 1," achieved a major breakthrough in key design and manufacturing technologies, with many performance indicators ranking first in the world, filling the gap in China's ultra-deepwater drilling field, and winning the 2011 National Science and Technology Progress First Prize. In the past two years, facing the severe market situation, COSCO Ship Engineering has expanded its operations and overcome difficulties, further consolidating and enhancing its first-mover advantage in offshore engineering. In 2012, COSCO Ship Engineering successfully delivered several major offshore engineering projects, further enhancing the brand image of COSCO Offshore Engineering. Currently, COSCO Ship Engineering holds offshore engineering orders accounting for more than one-third of the total orders of shipyards nationwide, and has simultaneously started construction on more than 30 offshore engineering projects.
The General Secretary listened and took notes, occasionally asking questions about matters of concern, to which Ni Tao answered one by one. After listening, the General Secretary nodded frequently, expressing his affirmation, and encouraging the enterprise to seize opportunities and develop the offshore engineering industry well.
